What grid trading strategies in Forex are

Published: · Updated:

A grid strategy opens positions at preset distances from the price and closes them when the price comes back by the required amount. It does not try to guess the direction — it earns on oscillations.

How it works

  • The first position opens by an entry rule.
  • If price moves against it by one grid step, the next position opens in the same direction — the basket's average price improves.
  • The whole basket is closed when the combined result reaches the target (in money or pips).

Why it works in a range

Currency pairs spend much of their time oscillating in ranges. A grid turns these oscillations into a series of small closed cycles.

The main risk

A prolonged one-way trend with no pullback. Each new position adds exposure, the floating loss grows faster than linearly, and so does the margin used — until the broker's Stop Out level is reached. One such episode can wipe out the result of many successful cycles.

What limits the risk

  • A maximum number of levels and total basket volume.
  • An equity drawdown limit with forced closure.
  • A grid step tied to volatility rather than fixed.
  • Pauses around significant economic events.
  • Conservative leverage and a margin buffer.

Conclusion

A grid is a tool with an asymmetric profile: frequent small profits and rare large losses. Judge it by its maximum drawdown and worst case, not by its average return.
