Brokers for Algorithmic Trading: MT4 & MT5 Compatibility Guide

Published: · Updated:

MetaTrader support alone does not mean a trading algorithm will run at a broker the way it ran in the tester. From the official pages of ten brokers we checked what an Expert Advisor's technical operation depends on — and show separately where compatibility with FOX algorithms is confirmed, where it follows from documents only and where there are limitations.

Why the broker matters to an algorithm

An Expert Advisor applies the same rules everywhere, but the outcome depends on the conditions of a specific account: trade cost, execution speed and quality, margin requirements and the level at which positions are force-closed. An algorithm that opens several positions on one instrument in the tester simply cannot run as designed at a broker with netting mode or a FIFO rule.

So we compare verifiable parameters rather than "best brokers". The source is only the brokers' official pages (links at each broker). Where a figure is not published on the pages checked, we write "not specified". Conditions depend on the legal entity serving the client and on the client's country — check them before opening an account.

Which brokers support trading robots

All ten brokers offer MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, and on all of them the platform technically runs Expert Advisors. The differences lie in the details that decide compatibility:

  • Explicitly allow hedging (opposite positions on one symbol): IC Markets (no FIFO rule), FP Markets, Tickmill, Exness, XM. For Alpari, MT4 and MT5 hedging-mode accounts are confirmed by FOX runs.
  • Explicitly allow EAs or "all strategies": IC Markets, FP Markets, Tickmill (except the TradingView Raw account), FxPro, Exness. At the others the platform supports EAs, but no specific rule is given on the pages checked.
  • Publish order limits: Admirals (500 open and pending on MT5, 200 on MT4), FP Markets (no order limit, but at most 5,000 trade actions per day), Exness (unlimited positions).
  • Publish Margin Call / Stop Out: Alpari, FP Markets, IC Markets (Stop Out), Exness, Admirals (Stop Out), RoboForex (ProCent). FxPro's pages disagree.

Which conditions matter for FOX algorithms

Spreads

Brokers mostly publish minimum values ("from 0.0"), not averages. IC Markets publishes an average EUR/USD spread (0.1 pips on Raw Spread); Pepperstone publishes minimum spreads per pair (0 on Razor, 1 on Standard for EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, USD/CHF, USD/CAD). Real average spreads on the five pairs have to be measured on a demo — at different times of day and around news.

Full trade cost

A commission "per side" is charged on opening and on closing: $3.50 per side = $7 per lot round turn ≈ 0.7 pips on EUR/USD. For a multi-order algorithm the cost multiplies by the number of positions in the basket. Swaps are published in the symbol specification in the terminal; mind the triple swap.

Execution quality and slippage

Market execution gives no requotes but allows slippage; instant execution may answer with a requote. For an EA that must open a position exactly when a condition is met, market execution — and slippage measured on a demo — is preferable.

Order limits

Limits on open and pending orders, on trade actions per day, the minimum stop distance and the freeze level. IC Markets publishes a 0 distance and 0 freeze level; FP Markets — 5,000 actions per 24 hours; Admirals — 500/200 orders.

Margin requirements

Leverage sets how much margin each basket position takes; Stop Out sets the level at which the broker starts closing positions. High leverage does not make trading safer, and a 0% Stop Out means no safety level at all. Regulated entities in the EU, the UK and Australia cap retail leverage (30:1 on major pairs).

Hedging

In MetaTrader 5 an account is either in netting mode (one position per symbol) or hedging mode (several positions). Algorithms that hold several positions on one symbol need hedging mode. On MT4 what matters is no FIFO rule and no ban on opposite positions.

VPS

An EA has to run continuously 24/5. A VPS next to the trading server lowers latency and does not depend on a home connection. Free or sponsored VPS: Exness, Admirals, FP Markets (by volume), FxPro (VIP); IC Markets publishes its server location (Equinix NY4).

Compatibility with FOX algorithms

Below are the technical requirements of the current FOX trading algorithms for five currency pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, USD/CHF, USD/CAD; builds for MT4 and MT5). No source code or trading logic is disclosed.

  • MT5: a hedging-mode account. On a netting account a FOX EA does not start — on purpose, so that positions are never merged into one.
  • MT4: no FIFO rule and no ban on opposite positions.
  • Several simultaneous market positions on one symbol (a basket of up to 11 positions depending on the algorithm and settings) and TP/SL changes on every basket position.
  • Minimum lot and lot step 0.01; 5-digit quotes (EUR/USD — 0.00001), standard contract 100,000.
  • Symbol name without a suffix; accounts with suffixed symbol names (e.g. EURUSD.r) must be checked on a demo.
  • A continuously running terminal (VPS) and the full account history in the terminal.
  • Enough free margin for the whole basket given the leverage and the Stop Out level of the specific account.

Confirmed

Alpari — FOX algorithms have run on Alpari MT4 and MT5 servers (MT5 account in hedging mode) in research and on demo accounts.

Compatibility follows from documents — demo test needed

IC Markets, FP Markets, Tickmill (Classic, Raw), Exness (Standard, Raw Spread, Zero), Admirals (Trade.MT5, Zero.MT5 — check hedging mode), FxPro (MT4/MT5 accounts — confirm hedging and Stop Out). The published conditions do not contradict FOX requirements, but FOX has not run its algorithms at these brokers.

Partial compatibility / limitations to check

Pepperstone (30:1 retail leverage at regulated entities, hedging and Stop Out not described), XM (Stop Out, commissions and EA rules not public), RoboForex (ECN commission, hedging, ECN Stop Out not published), Exness Pro (instant execution with possible requotes), Tickmill TradingView Raw (EAs not allowed). Never suitable: MT5 netting-mode accounts and accounts with a FIFO rule.

Compatible conditions do not guarantee a result: FOX algorithms carry high risk, the order-count limit is not a limit on monetary loss, and tester and demo results are not returns of live accounts.

How to test a broker properly

  1. Open a demo of the same account type at the same legal entity as the planned live account (entities differ).
  2. MT5: check in the account properties that the mode is hedging. MT4: confirm there is no FIFO.
  3. In the symbol specification check: digits, contract size, minimum lot and step, Stops level and Freeze level, swap and triple-swap day, symbol suffix.
  4. Calculate the margin for the largest basket at the chosen leverage and the level at which Stop Out triggers.
  5. Run the EA on a VPS near the broker's server; check the ping to the server.
  6. Run on the demo for at least 2–4 weeks, including major news days. Keep a log: spread at different times, slippage, requotes and rejections (the terminal's Experts and Journal tabs).
  7. Compare the full trade cost (spread + commission + swap) on the five pairs at the shortlisted brokers.
  8. Move to a live account only with an amount you can afford to lose; if possible, a cent account first.

Final comparison

We name no "best broker": the choice depends on your jurisdiction and regulatory requirements. On confirmed conditions for multi-order algorithms on MT4/MT5 these stand out:

  • Alpari — the only broker on whose servers FOX algorithms are confirmed by actual runs (MT4, MT5 hedging). Limitation — offshore regulation (MISA).
  • IC Markets — hedging and "all styles" explicitly allowed, no FIFO, zero order distance, NY4 server and average EUR/USD spread published. Limitation — an entity supervised by the Seychelles FSA.
  • FP Markets — hedging and scalping allowed, no order limit, MC 100% / SO 50% published; mind the 5,000 actions-per-day limit.
  • Tickmill — all strategies allowed on Classic and Raw, low Raw commission; Stop Out not published.
  • Exness — unlimited positions, hedging and a free VPS published; a 0% Stop Out requires your own risk limit.
  • If you need EU, UK or Australian supervision, brokers with such entities (Pepperstone, FxPro, FP Markets, Tickmill) cap retail leverage — recalculate the multi-order algorithm settings and the deposit.
